How We Alphabetize/Sort

We ignore articles such as "A" and "The" for sorting, but they are included in the name (same for foreign words of the same purpose, such as "El" and "La"). Thus you will The Closet Door under "C."
If it appears that a person's first and/or last name are part of the business name, we sort by the first word of the business. For example, Peter Asher Designs is sorted by the word "Peter."
If it appears that the person's name is not a business name, we sort by their last name. For example, John Barcroft is sorted by "John."
Business names that start with a number are alphabetized as if the number was spelled out, although the number itself is what you see. So, 101 Inspirations would be found as if it is spelled out: One Hundred, so it's under "O" (but you see "101").
We type abbreviations such as "Mr." and "St.", but for alphabetical purposes, sort them as though spelled out (for our example, "Mister" and "Saint.")
Business names that start with caps (such as JP's Barber Shop) are listed first, under the letter they start with. Otherwise we'd need a whole 'nuther set of rules, and I don't want to work that hard!
All that said, we do make mistakes. Please let us know if you find any, or, if you're a business owner and you want your business' name listed differently. We're here to help you!

You may see a business listed more than once. Sometimes our sources list the name differently. To make sure that the business is found on the OCBN site (and in case they really are two different businesses), we'll show all versions of the business name until the correct one is verified.
